For a prescription to be written, it must be available for selection in your customers’ electronic health record (EHR) medication list. The drug database is a foundational database with comprehensive drug product and disease nomenclature information. Drugs are organized by National Drug Code (package size and tablet strength). It includes drug names, drug product information, disease names, coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, generic names, brand names, and common abbreviations.

Its purpose is to ensure all the information needed to e-prescribe a drug is available. Health care organizations can choose from different drug databases, such as First Databank, MedBank, Multum MediSource, or others.

All EHRs have a process to periodically update the medication list compendia using a file provided by their EHR drug database vendor, but the process may not happen instantly—in fact, some EHRs may not have new products listed for as many as 6 months.

Also, once your brand is listed in the drug database compendia, customer organizations may not download and update their local version of the EHR immediately when it is available, as it can be arduous and time consuming for the local EHR administrators.

Another challenge is that one health system could have 10+ instances of an EHR, and not all of those instances may update at the same time. So, one office may have it listed in their EHR within a health system, while another practice might not have had their EHR updated yet within the same health system. Therefore, your brand may not be available in the EHR to be prescribed at time of launch or even after it has been added to the drug database compendia.

How Prescribers Can Get Immediate Access to Prescribing Your Brand

Many EHRs enable the ability to manually add a new medication to the product list so it will appear when a prescriber searches for it. Medications that have been added manually can be saved so that the brand is a documented prescription and in the patient record. Ensuring that the health care provider (HCP) has all the information to accurately add the brand is very important for successful dispensing.

Optimizing Your Brand in the EHR

  • Does the brand entry have the correct strength, route, form, generic name, pharmaceutical class, and subclass indicated?

  • Would you incorporate prior authorization or hub tools into your EHR/eRx workflow and systems to ensure appropriate patients get the prescription as prescribed?

  • Would you incorporate patient education into your eRx workflow?

  • Would you create an eRx favorite?

  • Do you currently have a relevant order set that needs updating?

By using Aventria’s EHR ecosystem and Prescriber Notification Platform™, health care teams can follow steps to ensure your brand is entered in the system correctly, follows the prescribing information, and has all the right information for approval and dispensing.

Important Goals Once the HCP Has Decided to Write the Brand:

  • Helping to easily, quickly, and confidently prescribe your new brand

  • Ensuring no incomplete prescriptions are written

  • Helping the patient get their prescribed drug as quickly as possible

Aventria can help get your brand, new or existing, listed in more EHR systems FASTER and with a BROADER reach, ensuring greater impact nationwide.
